Pastoral Letter - February 29, 2024

On this day in history, only 1/4 as much stuff happened as usual.   Garrison Keillor in his Writer's Almanac could find only one event worthy of note:  Italian composer  Gioacchino Rossini was born on this day in 1792.   Rossini is still famous for the William Tell Overture and dozens of delightful opera overtures.   The operas themselves, some fifty of them, are not performed very often.

We are now in the second week of Lent.   Next Sunday will be Communion Sunday.  The sermon will focus on Saint John's account of Jesus driving the money-changers out of the temple.

Our prayers will focus, as ever on our family, friends, community, sister churches and the whole people of God; beginning and ending with gratitude for the gift of life.

Lord, give us life while we have work yet to do; give us work while we have life left to live.   When asked what people need to be happy, Sigmund Freud said, "Love and work.”

Some news:

The City of San Carlos will celebrate its 100th birthday next year.  As our church's 100th birthday also impends, we are looking for ways to link the two events.

I will be giving a lecture on March 28 at 7 pm in the sanctuary, something about the public philosophy of President Kennedy.   More on this as the day approaches.  The lecture will be sponsored by the Dartmouth Club of Silicon Valley, but church members are welcome to attend.

There will be a noon service on Good Friday, March 29;   I think at the Episcopal Church, up Arroyo a few blocks.  Various clergy, including Lutheran Pastor Joshua and I will take part.

We received a note from Teo who is in Samoa:

“Please send my love to all our church members. Keep warm, I know the weather there is cold and raining. It’s very warm here in Samoa. See you soon, miss you all

God bless!”

Let this note warm our hearts in the midst of another period of cold rain here in the Bay Area.
