Pastoral Letter, September 28, 2023

To the saints in San Carlos:

A beautiful autumn morning here on the Peninsula.  I climbed up the hill above San  Carlos yesterday to enjoy the view of distant Mt. Diablo now that the smoke has cleared.  What a difference some rain makes up north where the wildfires burned.

Our psalm for Sunday, Psalm 51, begins:

Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and put a new and right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from thy presence,

and take not thy Holy Spirit from me.

A good autumn meditation; a good meditation any time of year.

As Garrison Keillor says:

"Be well, do good work, and keep in touch."

If you want to enjoy coffee and fellowship outdoors of a warm autumn morning, come on down to Plantation Coffee on Laurel Avenue #748.  I’m often there mid-morning, along with a collection of friendly folks.

Invocation

Come, Holy Spirit, fill this place,

anoint these servants with your grace.

Inspire and guard them with your might

and be, Creator, their delight.

Your sev’nfold gifts we seek this hour;

your wisdom, knowledge, truth and power.

May counsel, love, and peace prevail.

Such gifts from you will never fail.

Creator, Spirit, hear us sing;

breathe fire into the praise we bring.

The mighty Spirit lives in power;

the church renewed responds this hour.

Create in me a clean heart, O God,and put a new and right spirit within me.Cast me not away from thy presence,and take not thy Holy Spirit from me.Restore to me the joy of thy salvation,and uphold me with a willing spirit.Then I will teach transgressors thy ways,and sinners will return to thee.Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,thou God of my salvation,and my tongue will sing aloud of thy deliverance.O Lord, open thou my lips,and my mouth shall show forth thy praise.For thou hast no delight in sacrifice;were I to give a burnt offering, thou wouldst not be pleased.The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

- Psalm 51

PRAYER TIME

Hymn                           #570 Sweet Hour of Prayer, First Verse

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God,we confess that we have sinned against youin thought, word, and deed,by what we have done,and by what we have left undone.We have not loved you with our whole heart;we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,have mercy on us and forgive us;that we may delight in your will,and walk in your ways,to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sinsthrough our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness,

and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us ineternal life. Amen.

Ezekiel 36:24-28

For here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to take you out of these countries, gather you from all over, and bring you back to your own land.  I'll pour pure water over you and scrub you clean.  I'll give you a new heart, put a new spirit in you. I'll remove the stone heart from your body and replace it with a heart that's God-willed, not self-willed.  I'll put my Spirit in you and make it possible for you to do what I tell you and live by my commands.  You'll once again live in the land I gave your ancestors. You'll be my people! I'll be your God.

Acts 19:1-5

Now, it happened that while Apollos was away in Corinth, Paul made his way down through the mountains, came to Ephesus, and happened on some disciples there.  The first thing he said was, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? Did you take God into your mind only, or did you also embrace him with your heart? Did he get inside you?" "We've never even heard of that - a Holy Spirit? God within us?"

         "How were you baptized, then?" asked Paul. "In John's baptism."  "That explains it," said Paul. "John preached a baptism of radical life-change so that people would be ready to receive the One coming after him, who turned out to be Jesus. If you've been baptized in John's baptism, you're ready now for the real thing, for Jesus."

         And they were. As soon as they heard of it, they were baptized in the name of the Master Jesus.
